Abstract
Socioemotional selectivity theory suggests that effectiveness of emotional regulation increase with age, it leading to emotional well-being in older adults. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship emotion regulation and emotional experience in older adults, using the cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire(CERQ). A total 172 subjects(60 older adults and 112 younger adults)were participated in present study. The results showed that adaptive cognitive coping strategies(i.e. positive refocusing, positive appraisal, putting into perspective, acceptance)with daily stress event were reported by older adults to a significantly higher extent than by younger counterpart. ¡¯Catastrophizing¡¯ was found to play an important role in the relationship between the experience of negative affect and the reporting of symptoms of depression and anxiety in older adults and younger adults. Contrary to older adults group, the less use of adoptive emotional regulation strategies(i.e. positive refocusing, refocus on planning) were related to the reporting of a higher extent of depression, anxiety, negative affect in younger adults. In the both groups, the use of positive refocusing strategies was shown to play important role in the reporting of positive affect. This could be linked to the well-established cognitive behavioral therapy for older adults. Suggestion and direction for future studies were discussed.
